Lost in the Details. This challenge is about getting lost in the details. Once you’ve found a subject you want to photograph, challenge yourself to work a little further into the scene.

As a mom of nine, I often times get lost because of the details and I chuckled to myself when I saw this challenge this week.  I love the weekly photo challenges since I consider myself an amateur photographer.  I find that the challenges inspire my creativity as a photographer and as a writer.  Since it is winter and quite bleak (and cold) outside right now and I am not particularly inspired to spend some time out there finding that perfect object to photograph, I am going to be lazy and look through the thousands of pictures I do have on hand.  Chuckling to myself again.

In 2011, my husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary by traveling to Europe, mainly Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.  As typical tourists in Rome, we took hundreds of  pictures of every ancient and famous monument/structure/building/statue we saw.  How easily it was for us to take fifty pictures just of the Colosseum.  Here is our typical “here we are at the Colosseum” picture (which I do love, by the way).

While standing in the Colosseum and thinking about its history, I was suddenly struck by how ancient the very stones were.  Who were the first people who rested their hands on the very rocks I am touching today?  What were they thinking of 2000 years ago?  It was fascinating and mind boggling at the same time.  I love the miniature setting on my little digital camera.  It helps to capture those details.   Details are important.  Details help enrich our life.  If we go a million miles per hour and don’t stop and marvel at the details, life goes by way too quickly.  Where is the joy of discovery?  Where is the joy of truly living?
