O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
By Katharine Lee Bates
Even though I am saddened by the memories of this day 13 years ago, my heart is full of gratitude for our country, for our heroes, and for the undimmed spirit of the American people “from sea to shining sea”.

Thankful Thursday . Joining in with you as we all remember. We remember where we all were and what we were doing when we first heard of the horror. But also I have a very special and lovely memory in witnessing the birth of our grandson. He was born in New Zealand three years ago on the ten year anniversary of September 11
